The activated carbon or charcoal is a natural filter media and these filters are used mainly as a supplementary or stand-alone filter in most water filter systems. These filters have good contaminant removal ability, are good for improving the taste of the water, and since they have a long history as a filter media, they are highly absorbent.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of carbon filters?

Here is an overview of the reasons why these types of filters are excellent and why these filters don't excel in some areas.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Activated Carbon Filter

Advantages of Activated Carbon Filter:

  • Natural filter: the filter is made from materials like bituminous, wood, and coconut shell, chemical materials, and other contaminants are not applied to the water, so the process is accomplished by natural filtration.

  • Easy maintenance and low-cost: These filters are among the cheapest filters and don't require much in terms of maintenance. Any filter cartridge brand and model has a certain service life which is to be replaced with a filter cartridge at the end.

  • Good for drinking water as it enhances the smell and taste of tap water.

  • Useful for filtering out other carbon, organic and chemical disinfectants such as chlorine and certain microorganisms.

Disadvantages of Activated Carbon Filter:

  • These types of filters are not effective when eliminating non-carbon chemicals (e.g. heavy metals, nitrates, fluoride, sodium, etc.).

  • Limited service life: if contaminants are filled at the location of the connection (those responsible for 'trapping' contaminants), AC filters will stop operating and must therefore be replaced.

  • Factors such as the amount of activated carbon and how long the water remains in contact with the filter media can decide the effectiveness of filtration. The effectiveness of the carbon filter media decreases if water does not stay in contact with the filter long enough.

  • These filters may not be efficient for any pathogenic bacteria or viruses and can harbor bacteria that may result in bacterial growth; however, some filters have been able to prevent this by adding traces of silver to prevent the growth of the bacteria (these filters are known as silver-impregnated activated carbon filters).

As mentioned, no filter media can remove all contaminants and in doing so, complex filtration systems will provide high quality filtered water using many types of filter media.

Blue Clean is one such provider that caters to the necessity of the consumers. We offer the best type of activated carbon filter for your home and our services are also reasonable. You can visit Blue Clean for more information.
